llan’s first contact with the law was as an articled Law Clark in his hometown of Wagga Wagga, where he worked for several years. He subsequently tried his hand at various vocations including jackarooing, truck driving, lifeguarding, marketing, stockbroking and merchant banking before returning to law.
He graduated in 1973 with a Commerce Degree from the University of NSW, majoring in Economics and Accounting. He then enrolled at the new law school in the University of NSW whilst simultaneously working as in-house lawyer with a merchant banker.
Allan graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 1976 and then attended the College of Law, attaining his Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies later that year. He was admitted as a solicitor in NSW on 11 February 1977. Subsequently, he was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in Victoria in March 1980 and as a solicitor in Queensland in October 1991. He was admitted to the High Court of Australia as a solicitor in November 1979. In 1997, he was appointed a Public Notary by the Chief Justice of NSW.
Allan obtained accreditation as a Specialist in Personal Injury Law, awarded by the Law Society of NSW, in 1993 and was accredited as a Specialist in Commercial Litigation in 1995, by way of further post-graduate qualifications.
In 1984, he was appointed an arbitrator to arbitrate matters in the Local Court by the Chief Magistrate of NSW. He has also been appointed as an accredited arbitrator and mediator of the District Court of NSW and as an evaluator of the Supreme Court of NSW.
Allan’s extensive experience as a negotiator and litigator, as well as the respect of his peers, resulted in his appointment as an Assessor with the Claims Advisory and Resolution Service by the Motor Accident Authority in 2004. In this role, he regularly assesses damages for those injured in motor vehicle accidents.
In 1992, he attended a LEADER training course and subsequent refresher courses to be appointed an accredited mediator. He has successfully conducted mediation for the Bar Association of Queensland, Queensland Law Society, the Law Society of NSW and privately. He is a past panel mediator for The Building Services Corporation and past member of the Community Aid Panel for Lismore since 1990.
He is a past visiting lecturer in Ethics and Professional Conduct at Southern Cross University at Lismore and a past member of The Law Consultative Committee of The School of Law and Justice at Southern Cross University. He is a previous lecturer in Company Law at The Northern Rivers CAE (now Southern Cross University). He is a past chairman of the Northern Rivers Community Fund Limited. He is a regular speaker at the NSW State Legal Conference and has presented papers at other conferences.
From admission until mid-1980, Allan worked in a city practice specialising in corporate and personal insolvency. In July 1980, he moved from Sydney to Lismore and joined the firm first as an employee, then as a partner. He is now the Senior Partner at S+P Lawyers.
He has been involved in all aspects of law since that time, including advising on takeovers and mergers, liquidations, receiverships, corporate governance of companies, co-operatives and trusts, real estate developments, estate planning and financing. He has experience in all aspects of litigation, particularly making and defending claims in estate litigation, seeking compensation and damages for all manner of wrongs, seeking injunctions, advising on building litigation and defending criminal matters. Allan has represented parties from the Local Court at Byron Bay through to the Court of Appeal in the Supreme Court of NSW and on to the High Court of Australia in Canberra.
He has previously been regional president of the Far North Coast Law Society on several occasions as well as being appointed alternative councillor of the Law Society of NSW in 1994. He is a past chairman of AUSTLAW, an association of over 17 law firms comprising over 100 partners and 700 professional and support staff.
Allan and his wife raised and educated a family in Byron Shire and were involved in all aspects of community support, including serving as president of various P&Cs and numerous committee appointments.
